Today is the first day persons can file papers to run for city council and school board. Both the city council and school board elections will be held November Fifth. There will be three seats open on the Decorah city council, whoever wins the September 24th special election in ward two, ward four councilman Steve Luse and at-large council representative Kirk Johnson. There are three seats open on the Decorah school board, Ben Lange, John Hjelle and Brian Petersburg. The deadline to file papers is September 19th.

This week is the first full week of school. Winneshiek county sheriff Dan Marx is reminding travelers persons who pass a stop school bus could face serious penalities,

Marx says fortunately there has not been any injury accidents in Winneshiek county but says they’ve had a number of close calls.

The Winneshiek county board of supervisors will review a temporary wavier request regarding the county’s UTV ordinance at its meeting today. Aaron Johnson will make the request on behalf of the St. Jude’s Benefit Ride. The board will also discuss road matters and an agreement with the University of Iowa. The meeting will begin at nine-30 at the courthouse annex building in Decorah

The Decorah city council will hold a special meeting tonight. The council will look to approve the plans and specs for the East Broadway Alley Improvement project and will set a public hearing for the 2019 street improvement project. The meeting will begin at five p.m. at city hall.

Following the special meeting, the property committee of the council will meet. The topic of discuss a proposed veterans memorial park and purchasing real estate and selling public real estate.

A Monona man was arrested following a Friday night traffic stop. The Waukon Police Department says 26 year old Jacob Reed was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
